Summer in Alta Valtellina has a magical flavor. Whether you are travelling as a couple or with your family, with friends or with an organized group, there are many activities you can enjoy during the summer.
Fraele Towers - Cancano Lakes
The Fraele Valley is a small suspended world, a plateau at an altitude of 1930 meters that takes one's breath away.
The easy winding road from Bormio to Livigno leads to the ancient Fraele Towers, visible all the way up from Bormio. At one time, the towers guarded a large part of the Magnifica Terra and were used to signal invading armies. The border between Valdidentro and Val San Giacomo is marked today by these towers, located between Monte delle Scale (2521 m) and Cima Plator (2910 m). Continuing along the path, the road becomes flat and soon leads to the beautiful Lago delle Scale lake, the only natural one in the valley. Just past the lake you can rent MTBs or relax at the Ristoro Monte Scale. Leaving the lake, take the dirt road that reaches and runs alongside the two artificial lakes: the Cancano dam and the San Giacomo reservoir. There are several refreshment stations and signs with maps of the area and several picnic areas with grills for a barbecue in nature.
When you reach the edge of the large lake, continue along the beautiful flat road, on an enchanting plateau, surrounded by an almost unreal atmosphere. And then continue along the road, until you are just few steps away from the Swiss valley to Santa Maria Monastero, on the border between Italy and Switzerland. From the Val Fraele pass, you can also descend via the Val del Gallo to the lake and the plain of Livigno, to pass from there into the Swiss territory.
Stelvio Pass
Open from June to November, the Stelvio Pass (2760 m a.s.l.) is the second highest car pass in Europe. It lies within the Stelvio National Park, close to important massifs such as Monte Livrio, Ortles and Monte Scorluzzo.
The pass is located close to the border with the Swiss Grisons, to which it is connected via the nearby Giogo di Santa Maria-Passo dell'Umbrail (2503 m a.s.l.).
The Stelvio is a popular destination for ski and mountain tourism, cyclists and motorcyclists.
Paths
Summer in Valdidentro has also a lot to offer even to those who love trekking and excursions.
Here you have the opportunity to walk in the Stelvio National Park and to spot, if you are lucky, typical animals of our mountains such as the ibex, the marmot or the bearded vulture with its majestic flight. Not only routes for expert hikers, but also walks suitable for the whole family, on well-marked and signposted routes with varying degrees of height.
On Valtellina Outdoor you can discover the customized or do-it-yourself route for your hike or walk.
